GENERAL
Here is a quick summary of how they are calculated:
During some parts of your quest your avatar will travel by boat. Paddling down-streams would typically move you quite much faster than normal walking. When the paddling bonus is turned on you will receive extra bonus distance in the quest for all distance you walk in real life. The bonus varies depending on the conditions of the (in-game) river but is generally a factor of 2x to 5x your real life walking distance.
The bonus distance will only affect your progress in the quest, it will not show on any of your Quest Stats.
Mr Underhill is very fast indeed! He is in a great hurry as the fate of the world rests on his shoulders. Still, he does take a couple of very long breaks along the way (it is hard to blame him when there is elven food, wine and song on the menu). If you want to challenge him then you should aim at averaging at least 8 miles (13 km) per day, with “Paddling bonus” turned on. Luckily, for those of us that identify more with the the average halfling, there are other challengers to choose from.
DEVICE COMPATIBILITY
Fantasy Hike is primarily intended for mobile phones that have a sensor for step counting.
Fantasy Hike does not run on Wear OS, but the steps and/or distance data from your Wear OS device can be synced to Health Connect, either via the device's companion app or a fitness app that you install on the device (e.g., Google Fit). Fantasy Hike can then retrieve the data from Health Connect.
Yes, you can configure Fitbit to sync data with Health Connect, allowing Fantasy Hike to retrieve it from there.
Yes, you can configure Google Fit to sync data with Health Connect, allowing Fantasy Hike to retrieve it from there.
QUEST TRACKING
Fantasy Hike uses the device’s step counter sensor to count all your steps and then estimates your distance based on your step length.
Fantasy Hike can also use data from other sources through Health Connect, see Health Connect section.
Go to:
Settings Tab -> Quest Tracking -> Scan for Old DataWhen you scan for old data Fantasy Hike will also update the distance for all days.
Fantasy Hike does not yet have a way to report data manually directly in the app, it is something that we are planning to add.
In the meantime it is possible to manually add data in another app, such as Google Fit, which syncs it to Health Connect from which Fantasy Hike can pick it up.
No. However if your device is positioned in a way that triggers the step counter sensor it can result in steps and distance.
If you use Health Connect as a source and have another device or app that reports driving distance as a ‘distance activity’ then Fantasy Hike may pick up the data from Health Connect.
You can configure your step length manually
Settings Tab -> Body Measurements -> Step LengthSee below for how to measure your step length.
Or you can let Fantasy Hike set it automatically. It is then recommended that you set your gender, height and year of birth.
Since Fantasy Hike measures all the steps you take during the day, you may not want to take large steps (as if taking a brisk walk) but rather try to walk like you do at home/work.
It will search Health Connect for additional data reported since the start of your quest. When it does this it will use the activity that is currently configured in the Health Connect settings (Steps or Distance).
Note that it will only add additional data/steps, it will never decrease the current calculated distance. The reason is that this could lead to very undesired loss of data.
After searching for additional data it will update the distance and stats for every day of the quest.
Since this may have a big impact on your quest data it is recommended that you first save your quest.
Limitations: Health Connect allows apps to read data for up to 30 days prior to the time permission was first granted. This means that if you re-install Fantasy Hike it will not have access to search for additional Health Connect data that is reported more than 30 days prior to the re-install (even if your quest have an earlier start date).
HEALTH CONNECT
“Health Connect gives you a simple way to store and connect the data between your health and fitness apps, without compromising on privacy.”
Health Connect is developed by Google. Starting in Android 14 it is a part of the Android system, on earlier versions it can be installed as an app from Google Play Store.
Fitness apps such as Google Fit, and companion apps to different fitness devices can report fitness data to Health Connect. Allowing other apps, such as Fantasy Hike, to retrieve it from there.
Go to:
Settings Tab -> Quest Tracking -> Health ConnectAt the top of the page you can see the current status
Not installed:
Click to open the Health Connect page on Google Play Store
No Access:
Click to open Health Connect and give Fantasy Hike permission to read ‘Distance’ and ‘Steps’. Fantasy Hike requires access to both these activities to work with Health Connect.
Access:
Fantasy Hike has access to Health Connect Data. You can click to open Health Connect and manage data and access.
Depending on what devices and apps you have that report data to Health Connect you may get more accurate data from either the Steps or the Distance activity.
Steps
When ‘Steps’ is selected Fantasy Hike will use the steps data from Health Connect and calculate the distance based on the step length configured in Fantasy Hike. This is a good option if the Health Connect sources only report steps or if some source reports distance data for activities such as driving.
Distance
When ‘Distance’ is selected Fantasy Hike will use the distance data from health Connect. This can be beneficial if you have a Health Connect source that can give a more accurate distance than what is possible for Fantasy Hike to estimate from your step count. For example a source that uses GPS tracking, or a source that can estimate the step length for each step.
If both Health Connect and the Device Step Counter is enabled Fantasy Hike will retrieve data from both and select the data from the source that will result in the longest distance during a small time period.
If you only want to use data from Health Connect you can disable the Device Step Counter:
Settings Tab -> Quest Tracking -> Device Step CounterThis can be a good option if you have an external device that reports accurate data for your walking/running activities
Google sets a limit on how frequently apps can sync with Health Connect. As a result, there is usually a delay both before the app with the data syncs it to Health Connect and then an additional delay before Fantasy Hike retrieves it.
QUEST MANAGEMENT
Your quest is included in Fantasy Hike’s app data, so if you use one of the standard Android methods to transfer data from your old phone to your new phone, your quest will be transferred as well.
Alternatively, you can save your quest to a file and load it onto your new phone. You do that here:
Settings Tab -> Quest ManagementIf you have enabled cloud backup on your phone (this can be done in the Settings app), Fantasy Hike’s data, including your quest, will be backed up.
Currently, we do not back up your quest on our servers.
Alternatively, you can save your quest to a file if you wish. You do that here:
Settings Tab -> Quest ManagementNo. Unfortunately this is currently not possible.
SUBSCRIPTIONS & PURCHASES
'Unlimited Distance' is a one time purchase that unlocks unlimited walking distance per day. This is a good option for users that don't want a subscription and that are happy with the basic features.
The Premium subscription provides access to 'Unlimited Distance' as well as the ability to share data with friends and see them on your map and in the fantasy world. It also includes additional premium avatars.
Yes, if your Fantasy Hike account is linked to your purchases on iOS, signing in with the same account on Android will ensure you retain access to 'Unlimited Data' and/or 'Premium'.
Providing the friends features comes with continuous costs in form of cloud servers, maintenance and support. Since we have chosen to keep Fantasy Hike ad-free we can’t provide these features without a reoccurring income.
The one-time purchase 'Unlimited Distance' is available for users that do not want the friend features.
PRIVACY
You can select what data you want to share with your friends here:
Settings Tab -> My Account -> PrivacyYou can block a user that keeps sending you friend requests. When you have an unwanted friend request instead of choosing Accept/Ignore you can block the user here:
Settings Tab -> My Account -> Blocked UsersYou will not receive friend invites from users that you have blocked. The users that you have blocked will not know that you have blocked them.
You can find our privacy policy here.
You may find the privacy policy complex (so do we!). We've had help from an external company to create it to ensure it fulfils requirement from different legislations, uses correct legal language and covers all eventualities.
Here is a more informal summary of how we use your data:
Data we collectTROUBLESHOOTING
Ensure that Fantasy Hike has the required permissions.
To track your progress properly Fantasy Hike always requires:
You can verify so that Fantasy Hike has access to these on: Settings Tab -> Quest Tracking
Some manufacturers add extra battery optimisations that prevents apps from starting in the background. On these devices Fantasy Hike needs to be added to the list of apps that are allowed to start in the background.
We try to identify these manufacturers and provide a link to configure this. Go to:
Settings Tab -> Quest TrackingAnd check if the item “Autostart in Background” is available in the ‘Permissions’ section.
If it is not available it is most likely because your phone does not require this, but it could also be because your phone manufacturer have updated something so that Fantasy Hike can’t find the setting for it. You can open the Settings app, search for “Autostart” and see if your phone has any settings for apps that are allowed to autostart in the background.
The placement of your phone may affect how many steps it registers and hence the distance in Fantasy Hike.
Generally it works better if you have it in your hand or in places close to your body.
You may have to configure your body measurements and/or your step length. Go to:
Settings Tab -> Body MeasurementsThe placement of your phone may effect how many steps it registers and hence the distance in Fantasy Hike.
Generally it works better if you have it in your hand or in places close to your body.
If you have allowed Fantasy Hike to read data from Health Connect then the data in Health Connect will affect your total miles.
Check in Fantasy Hike which Health Connect activity you have selected to use. Go to:
Settings Tab -> Quest Tracking -> Health ConnectNote that the option to select health activity is only visible when Fantasy Hike has access to Health Connect data.
Check the data for this activity in Health Connect. You can open Health Connect through:
Settings Tab -> Quest Tracking -> Health Connect -> Manage Data & AccessThen you can see the reported data:
Data and access -> Activity -> Distance/Steps -> See all entriesIf you have too much data in Health Connect you will have to investigate which app that reports this data. You may also want to switch which Health Connect activity Fantasy Hike is using (for more details see the Health Connect section).
If both Health Connect and the Device Step Counter are enabled in Fantasy Hike then it will collect activity data from both and then merge them by selecting the one that reported the most steps/distance during a short time period. This means that Fantasy Hike can have more distance than Health Connect.
If the Health Connect data is reasonable but Fantasy Hike registers too many miles then it can be because a Health Connect source reports the wrong start and stop time for the activities. This can lead to an incorrect merge of the data.
You can disable the step counter in Fantasy Hike and only use data from Health Connect:
Settings App -> Quest Tracking -> Device Step CounterThere can be many different reasons for this. One of the most likely causes is a problem with your payment details, such as an expired card or similar.
Google has a good support page with suggestions here. Of course you are also welcome to contact us if there is something we can assist you with.
In order to see your friends progress and to see your friends on the map the following conditions must be met:
Fantasy Hike uses RevenueCat to power the in-app purchases. With RevenueCat your purchases are linked to your Fantasy Hike account so that if you sign in on another device you will still have access to your subscription. This also means that if you sign out / switch account you may also loose access to your purchases.
However, you purchases are always tied to your Google Account (or Apple ID if you purchased it on iOS). You can always restore all purchases for your Google Account. You restore your purchases here:
Settings Tab -> Subscriptions & Purchases -> RestoreWhen you restore the purchases they will be linked to the Fantasy Hike account that you are signed in with.
Check if your quest is backed up. See "Is my Quest backed up?"
Sometimes it is possible to recreate your lost quest even if it is not backed up Contact us and we'll see how we can help you.
