How are the 'Second Breakfasts' and other stats calculated?

Here is a quick summary of how they are calculated:

  • Late mornings: If your first registered movement of the day is after a certain time in the morning.
  • Second Breakfast: If you have moved around, but then take a break between certain times in the morning.
  • Elevenses: Similar to second breakfast but somewhat later.
  • Afternoon Tea: Also similar but in the afternoon.
What does the 'Paddling Bonus' mean?

During some parts of your quest your avatar will travel by boat. Paddling down-streams would typically move you quite much faster than normal walking. When the paddling bonus is turned on you will receive extra bonus distance in the quest for all distance you walk in real life. The bonus varies depending on the conditions of the (in-game) river but is generally a factor of 2x to 5x your real life walking distance.

The bonus distance will only affect your progress in the quest, it will not show on any of your Quest Stats.

Is it possible to keep up with Mr Underhill?

Mr Underhill is very fast indeed! He is in a great hurry as the fate of the world rests on his shoulders. Still, he does take a couple of very long breaks along the way (it is hard to blame him when there is elven food, wine and song on the menu). If you want to challenge him then you should aim at averaging at least 8 miles (13 km) per day, with “Paddling bonus” turned on.

Luckily, for those of us that identify more with the the average halfling, there are other challengers to choose from.

DEVICE COMPATIBILITY

Will Fantasy Hike work with my Apple Watch?

Yes. Just make sure that Fantasy Hike has access to your Apple Health “Running + Walking Distance” data.

Will Fantasy Hike work with my Fitbit device?

Short answer

You can use a third-party app to sync your Fitbit data to Apple Health and this will work ok. However, make sure that your third-party app supports synching the "Walking + Running Distance" data.

Long answer

Fantasy Hike does currently not integrate directly with Fitbit. We are hoping we will be able to do a Fitbit integration in the future.

However if the data from Fitbit is reported to Apple Health then Fantasy Hike can pick it up from there. Unfortunately Fitbit does not report the data to Apple Health but there are several third-party apps available for this.

The third party apps that we have tried reports one long ‘walking activity’ that spans the complete day. Fantasy Hike has previously had problems picking up data reported this way from Apple Health but that issue has been resolved in version 1.2.3.

However when walking activity is reported this way Apple Health will distribute the distance throughout the complete day and this has some side-effects.

  • Apple Health will have a harder time merging the walking data from your Fitbit device with that from your iPhone. The result may be that the distance is Apple Health sometimes is greater than your actual walking distance.
  • Some of the stats in Fantasy Hike (such as ‘Early mornings’) are based on when during the day you walk. If data is distributed to all the hours of the day these stats will not work correctly.
  • Fantasy Hike will not pick up data that is ‘in the future’. This can result in Fantasy Hike ‘lagging behind’ during the day but eventually be on track again at midnight.

Example
You walk 2.4 miles at 9am. This activity is reported by third-party app as “5 miles between 12 am and 12 pm” and is distributed evenly through the 24 hours, 0.1 miles each hour. At 10 am Fantasy Hike will ‘pick up’ the distance from the first 10 hours of the day and report a total walk distance of 1 mile. At 4 pm Fantasy Hike will pick up the first 16 hours and report 1.6 miles. At 12pm Fantasy Hike will pick up all the 24 hours and your total distance for the day will be correct, 2.4 miles.

If you know a Fitbit synch app that reports “Walking + Running distance” to Apple Health in a more detailed manner, please let us know!

You can see how an app reports data to Apple Health here:

Health App -> Sharing Tab -> Apps -> {Name of App} -> Data from {Name of App} -> Walking + Running Distance
Will Fantasy Hike work with my Garmin device?

Short answer

Not well. Sorry :(

Long answer

Garmin Connect reports walking and running distance to Apple Health were Fantasy Hike can pick it up. However in our testing(1) Garmin Connect unfortunately reports the walking and running data without any proper start or end time, which is quite incompatible with Apple Health. Garmin does not seem very keen on addressing this issue.

This can result in that you get a much greater distance in Apple Health than what you’ve actually walked. Unfortunately the error in distance can be even greater in Fantasy Hike, this is due to Garmin Connect writing and re-writing the current day’s walking history in Apple Health every time it synchs.

Fantasy Hike does not integrate directly with Garmin’s own interfaces and has no plan to do so in the near future. We simply do not have the resources to maintain it.

If you still want to use Fantasy Hike with your Garmin device and with correct walking distance then one option is too not allow Garmin Connect to share “Walking + Running distance” to Apple Health and instead enter the data manually.

(1) We have tested with a limited set of Garmin devices.

QUEST TRACKING & QUEST MANAGEMENT

I just purchased Unlimited Distance / Premium. How do I get all the miles from when I started my Quest?

Go to:

Settings Tab -> Quest Tracking -> Search for Old Data

This will let you search for all data that has been reported since your quest started.

How do I report data manually?

Fantasy Hike does not yet have a way to report data manually directly in the app. However you can report data manually in the Health App and then Fantasy Hike will ‘pick it up’ from there.

You can report data manually here:

Health App -> Summary Tab -> ‘Walking + Running Distance’ -> Add Data (in the title bar)
How can I check if Fantasy Hike is integrated with Apple Health?

You can do this in the Health app:

Health App -> Sharing Tab -> Apps -> Fantasy Hike

Then verify that Fantasy Hike is allowed to read Walking + Running Distance.

Does Fantasy Hike count the distance that I drive?

No. Fantasy Hike uses the “Walking + Running distance” activity. However, sometimes you may receive notifications of quest progress when you drive. Apps in the background are not active all the time, Fantasy Hike “wakes up” in the background when iOS allows it and checks if there is any updates. This can result in a short delay in receiving the notifications of your progress.

If I have an account, is my quest backed-up on your cloud servers?

No, not currently.

If you choose to create a Fantasy Hike account then the data that you share with your friends is saved on our servers but your complete quest history is not. If you want to transfer your quest to a new phone see “How do I transfer my Quest to my new phone”.

How do I transfer my Quest to my new phone?

If you use Apple's Quick Start or if you use an iCloud backup to set up your new phone then your Fantasy Hike quest should be transfered as well.

You can also manually save your quest and then load it on your new phone. You save/load your quest here:

Settings Tab -> Quest Management

If you have lost your old phone then contact us, and we can see if we can help you recreate your quest.

SUBSCRIPTIONS & PURCHASES

What is the difference between 'Unlimited Distance' purchase and the Premium subscriptions?

'Unlimited Distance' is a one time purchase that unlocks unlimited walk distance per day. This is a good option for users that don't want a subscription and that are happy with the basic features.

The Premium subscriptions are reoccurring subscriptions that provides access both to 'Unlimited Distance', but also to sharing data with your friends and to see your friends on your map and in the fantasy world. They also give access to some more premium avatars.

Why do I need a subscription for using the friends features?

Providing the friends features comes with continuous costs in form of cloud servers, maintenance and support. Since we have chosen to keep Fantasy Hike ad-free we can’t provide these features without a reoccurring income.

The one-time purchase 'Unlimited Distance' is available for users that do not want the friend features.

What are the differences between the subscriptions?

The 'Premium', 'Premium Family' and 'Premium Hero' subscriptions all give full access to all features.

  • Premium: Full access.
  • Premium Family: Full access. Includes Apple Family sharing which allows you to share the subscription with family members.
  • Premium Hero: Full access. Includes Apple Family sharing which allows you to share the subscription with family members. If you want to give us extra support (requested by quite many users) you can do that by getting the Premium Hero subscription.
How do I turn on Family Sharing?

If you have the 'Premium Family' or 'Premium Hero' subscription you can use Apple Family Sharing.

For this you need to enable your subscriptions to be shared. You do this here

Apple Settings App -> [Your Name] -> Subscriptions

You can read more about Family Sharing subscriptions at Apple support

PRIVACY

Does Fantasy Hike save my location?

No. Fantasy Hike does not save your location. If you choose to give Fantasy Hike access to your location this is only used to be able to provide you with faster feedback on your progress. For more information see the Privacy Policy.

How can I decide what data I share?

You can select what data you want to share with your friends here:

Settings Tab -> My Account -> Privacy
How can I block a user?

You can block a user that keeps sending you friend requests. When you have an unwanted friend request instead of choosing Accept/Ignore you can block the user here:

Settings Tab -> My Account -> Blocked Users

You will not receive friend invites from users that you have blocked. The users that you have blocked will not know that you have blocked them.

Do you share and/or sell my data?

You can find our privacy policy here.

You may find the privacy policy complex (so do we!). We've had help from an external company to create it to ensure it fulfils requirement from different legislations, uses correct legal language and covers all eventualities.

Here is a more informal summary of how we use your data:

Data we collect
  • Data that is needed for the apps functionality. For example if you create an account then we collect email, username, password. If you share your data with your friends then the data that you share is collected, and so on.
  • Some analytics data. Such as “how often is the app used”.
  • Note that we never collect your location.
How we use it
  • We share your data in the sense that we use third-party providers for hosting it. The third-party services do not share or sell your data. They do not use your data for tracking.
  • We may use your data for our own analytics. For example to get an average of how often users interact with the app.
  • We may in rare cases use your data to contact you. For example if we notice something wrong with your account we may try to contact your through your email. We will not use your email for any promotional purposes.
  • We do not sell your data to any third-party.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Fantasy Hike registers no miles / not enough miles

Fantasy Hike can pick up distance from the Motion & Fitness framework as well as from Apple Health.

  • Verify that Fantasy Hike has access to Motion & Fitness. You do this on the Settings Tab in Fantasy Hike.

  • Sometimes all Motion & Fitness tracking is disabled on the device. Check this on:
Setting App -> Privacy & Security -> Motion & Fitness

  • Verify that Fantasy Hike has access to read “Walking + Running Distance” from Apple Health. You do this in the Health app
Health App -> Sharing Tab -> Apps -> Fantasy Hike

  • Verify that the distance you would expect has been reported to Apple Health. You do this in the Health app:
Health App -> Browse Tab -> Activity -> Walking + Running Distance
Fantasy Hike registers too many miles

We have only encountered this issue together with Garmin devices. If you have a Garmin device please read the ‘Will Fantasy Hike work with my Garmin device’ question for more details.

My purchase fails

There can be many different reasons for this. One of the most likely causes is a problem with your payment details, such as an expired card or similar.

There are many pages on the web with good suggestions on how to fix this. For example this one. Of course you are also welcome to contact us if there is something we can assist you with.

I can't see my friends' progress

In order to see your friends progress and to see your friends on the map the following conditions must be met:

  • You need to have a Premium subscription.
  • Your friend(s) need to have a Premium subscription.
  • Your friend(s) must share their data. See “How can I decide what data I share?”.
I signed in/out and my purchase/subscription disappeared

Fantasy Hike uses RevenueCat to power the in-app purchases. With RevenueCat your purchases is linked to your Fantasy Hike account so that if you sign in on another device you will still have access to your subscription. This also means that if you sign out / switch account you may also loose access to your purchases.

However, you purchases are always tied to your Apple ID. You can always restore all purchases for your Apple ID. You restore your purchases here:

Settings Tab -> Subscriptions & Purchases -> Restore
I lost my Quest!
